Exchange Server 12 - the wonderful truth

Windows 2003 32 bit. Exchange 2003 32 bit. Works nicely.
Windows 2003 or Vista 64 bit. Exchange 2003 32 bit. Nope.
Windows Vista 64 bit. Exchange 12 64 bit. Will be great.

NO 32 bit Exchange 12.

Currently most new servers are shipping with 64 bit processors and have been most of 2005. So by the time E12 ships to retail (not just beta), 64 bit hardware will have been shipping for a couple of years. Honestly, who is going to be installing either Windows 2003 R2 64 bit or Vista to run Exchange 12 on a server that is over 2 years old? Wake up and smell the roses.

There is going to be a backlash from Exchange Admins and industry pundits alike. Personally, I think it is a grand idea. Why? E12 offers numerous advantages, the 64 bit offering means about a 75% drop in IO. Realistically this means either cheaper disks, fewer spindles or more users on the same spec disks.

Downside? As detailed above, no in place upgrade will be possible. We have seen the future, the future is swing. Outlook is not affected in case you are wondering about 32 bit and 64 bit clients.

Upside? Every Exchange consultant in the land will be able to work every day on side by side upgrades. Now where did I put my CV?
